Zombie Panel

Posted July 19, 2013 into Lunch Time Video by John Birmingham

About 10 this morning I'm did a panel discussion on Google Hangouts about the shambling dead. The vid should be good to go below.

I was curious to see how something like this might work out. It struck me a being akin to a live video blog, and of course with that comes some interesting technical challenges.

This morning's was a resolute refusal by the Google Hangouts elf to let Scorcha (pronounced 'circa') our fourth contributor log into the discussion. Eventually we gave up and Skyped her in on Tim's laptop. A desperate hack but it allowed us to kick on.

I expect to see more of this sort of thing at festivals in future. People just logging in either as participants or observers.

"Penalised for killing a fresh zombie"... What the Frak!

"When Zombies Attack!: Mathematical Modeling of an Outbreak of Zombie Infection.” shows the only possible effective response is "and impulsive eradication of the zombies whenever possible."

Hope she isn't one of the surviors in my team.

Terri Lowry, late of Longview Community College and a mentor/friend of mine, suggested doing such a thing for the Longview Creative Writing Festival a couple of years back. Given how fickle Skype could be (and still is) I never really followed up on it.

Still, maybe we're finally getting the bugs worked out.

Respects,

Good one, JB. Interesting discussion about zombies. All speakers were well informed and spoke well. Nice work.

Yes, going live has its risks though. I felt for the two at the start of the podcast. How embarrassing. Not like you can go, 'Cut!'. Live teleconferencing. Then again, it's refreshing to see live reactions. I wouldn't be good in a podcast. I hate speaking in public, and it would be horrifying to get a live feed brain freeze.

Listened to about fifteen minutes worth in various spots. I like it when you look directly at the screen rather than eyes down towards the others in the podcast. Handsome bugger, aren't you? In fact, all beautiful people in this podcast.

I'm glad you mentioned the audio book of World War Z and hope that a lot of people download it for the next Cheeseburger Gothic online book club. Great audio book.

Do you know if listening to podcasts uses up a lot of data? I know downloading You Tube clips and music does.

Well done to all on the QUT Creative Industries podcast. Apart from the minor technical glitch at the start, all went very well.

Zombies running app sounds fun. Haha. I see you made your point again about your dislike for running zombies. 'Classic zombie' - priceless.

JG :)
