Ep15 - Grand Theft Autoerotica Podcast RSSiTunes

Posted September 30, 2013 into Spartacast by John Birmingham

Podcast 15 is out and a round of huzzahs is needed for Dan who worked on it while I lounged at the beach. This ep, one of th funniest chats we've had so far, was a hard one to edit because we had some terible interference on one of the Skype channels.

We discussed the midnight launch of GTA5, the infantilisation of modern adulthood, kitchen gadgets.

Because kitchen gadgets.

The Hoodies take us in and out.

So this podcast is like the "After Mash" or "Galactica 1980" of Birmo's career?

Great GTA moment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSmrXJbPeeA

Phantom Menace was released in Australia several weeks after release in the USA. (May 19 1999 USA (cos I went) and 3 June 1999 Oz http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120915/releaseinfo ). I saw it in the movie cinema across what's now the GooglePlex - and the audience went nuts.

ID4 only had the endings we saw - so everyone saw Sydney / Egypt and so on (it was too expensive to do location specific UFO crashes, though they thought about it (it's mentioned in one of the video commentaries))

Average age of video gamers is still late 30's. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_culture

Given the comments re "today's generation" and "the greatest generation". It's interesting to talk to Russians about the "western myth" that the "greatest generation" saw off the Nazis. From their perspective, taking the lion's share of the credit for fighting the Nazis is very much like the social media generation taking the lion's share of credit for a process and understating the contribution of others.

I don't think too many people underestimate Russia's involvement in the defeat of the Nazis and their, by far, highest number of civilian casualties.
Though 'we' (Britain, United States, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, India etc) take justified credit for the defeat of the German troops in Western and Southern Europe and North Africa. .
Stalin was happy to encourage Germany's westward expansion.

From the Australian perspective, like the U.S., we fought on two fronts. A couple of my uncles, after a pretty tough time in the North African desert fighting the Germans, found themselves up the Kokoda in the New Guinea highlands fighting the Japanese troops.

It was sobering to sit in RSLs in Newcastle, Australia in the 1980's and early 1990's and see friends of my uncles on crutches. They were on crutches due to tropical leg ulcers, contracted in New Guinea during WW2. Ulcers that had disappeared for decades, to reappear again in old age. My uncle Bill had them eating away his lower leg. It was horrible.
